NCALHD Honors Public Health Champions at Annual Awards Luncheon

The North Carolina Association of Local Health Directors (NCALHD) recently recognized remarkable achievements in advancing public health across the state at its Annual Awards luncheon. The prestigious honors were bestowed upon individuals and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, advocacy, and commitment to promoting the well-being of communities.

Lisa Macon Harrison, MPH, Health Director for Granville Vance Public Health, was named Health Director of the Year for her significant contributions to public health at the local, state, and national levels. Harrison’s dedication to increasing funding and implementing services that positively impact her community, as well as her role as a champion for local public health in North Carolina and across the nation, earned her this prestigious recognition.

Representative Wayne Sasser, NC House District 67, received the Public Health Legislative Champion Award for his unwavering advocacy and sponsorship of critical public health legislation. As Chair of the House Health and Appropriations Committees, Representative Sasser has championed initiatives such as Medicaid expansion, expanded contraceptive access, and securing resources for addiction treatment statewide.

Tobin Shepherd, REHS, was honored with the Ham Stevens Award for exemplifying the qualities of a former health director and friend of public health, Ham Stevens, M.D. Shepherd’s local public health advocacy, leadership in environmental health, and his exemplary career in public health earned him this recognition.

Durham Public Schools was awarded the Public Health Partner Award for its significant contributions to public health in Durham County. The school district’s partnerships in immunization, innovative nutrition programs, dental screenings, and firearm violence prevention programs, as well as its crucial role in the COVID-19 pandemic response, were commended.
