The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans’ French Quarter, has been honored with the 2026 Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, celebrating its exceptional wine program. The award, part of Wine Spectator’s annual Restaurant Awards, recognizes establishments that offer well-chosen wine lists with at least 75 selections that complement their menu in both price and style.
Wine Spectator Chairman and CEO Marvin R. Shanken highlighted the evolving restaurant landscape, noting that ‘the restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about when, how and what they drink. As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs.’ He congratulated the 4,012 restaurants that earned awards this year, emphasizing their role in elevating the wine experience for guests worldwide.
Co-owners Lori and Kevin Cates expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, ‘Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course. This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal.’
The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street on the quiet edge of the French Quarter, was founded by Verona-born Chef Samantha Castagnetti and is now owned by the Cates. The restaurant honors Northern Italian traditions with seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, complemented by a deeply Italian wine program.
Wine Spectator’s Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, recognize excellence in wine service across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants earned the Award of Excellence, 1,830 received the Best of Award of Excellence, and 99 achieved the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel joins the ranks of the Award of Excellence recipients.
The special Restaurant Awards issue of Wine Spectator will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026.
