Marine Toys for Tots, widely recognized as America’s flagship children’s Christmastime charity, is urging supporters to embrace the ‘Be a Summer Santa’ initiative this July. The program aims to extend the organization’s mission beyond December, bringing joy and comfort to children facing financial hardship during the summer months when resources are often scarce.
While Christmas in July may seem premature to some, for families struggling to make ends meet, these distributions can be a lifeline. According to the organization, the summer period often creates a ‘summer gap’ in resources and enrichment for children in low-income communities. A recent distribution event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, hosted by Storehouse of Community Resources—a redistribution partner of Good360—highlighted the impact of these efforts. Toys for Tots provided two brand-new toys each to 1,600 children, many of whom had not received any new toys all summer. For one mother of three, the moment was emotional. “I didn’t think they were going to get anything new this summer. This means more than you know,” she said, as her daughter clutched a new game and doll for the rest of the evening.
Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, emphasized the broader significance of these distributions. “Summertime distributions like these are not about recreating Christmas morning, but about extending its meaning,” he said. “Being a Summer Santa means creating moments of happiness during times of uncertainty, strengthening communities, and reminding families they are not alone.”
The initiative relies on supporters who choose to give beyond December. By becoming Summer Santas, donors help Toys for Tots meet children’s needs whenever they arise, working through strong nonprofit partnerships across the nation to deliver hope and the message that every child matters.
