Hong Kong Trade Development Council to Showcase Opportunities for Malaysian Businesses at Kuala Lumpur Symposium

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will bring its flagship promotional campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong, to Kuala Lumpur on August 11, aiming to connect Malaysian businesses with opportunities across Asia. The full-day symposium at Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur will gather business leaders, investors, and policymakers from both regions to explore investment and business prospects, with a focus on helping Malaysian companies expand beyond their domestic market.

As Malaysia pursues its New Industrial Master Plan 2030—which emphasizes industrial transformation, sustainability, and stronger integration into global value chains—Hong Kong positions itself as a strategic partner. Leung Kwan Ho, HKTDC’s Regional Director of South East Asia & South Asia, highlighted the longstanding economic relationship between the two regions, stating that Hong Kong can serve as a “superconnector and super value-adder” for Malaysian companies aiming to tap into the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the wider China market. Hong Kong is home to nearly 10,000 Chinese Mainland and overseas companies with regional operations, offering an established ecosystem of global businesses, investors, and professional services.

The symposium will address Malaysia’s evolving economic priorities through discussions on RMB internationalisation, sustainability and green innovations, Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre, and healthcare solutions. Notable guests include Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and YB Loke Siew Fook, Malaysia’s Minister of Transport, who will attend the opening ceremony.

In addition to the symposium, an exhibition will feature around 30 Hong Kong service providers and start-ups showcasing their products and solutions in the Business Support Zone and InnoVenture Salon. One-on-one business consultations and on-site business matching will facilitate collaborations between Malaysian and Hong Kong companies. A delegation of about 100 government officials and business leaders from sectors such as finance, innovation and technology, and environmental services will explore opportunities through discussions, networking events, and business matching meetings.

The event underscores the strong economic ties between Malaysia and Hong Kong. In 2025, Malaysia was Hong Kong’s third-largest trading partner among ASEAN member states. Hong Kong was also Malaysia’s second-largest investor after Singapore, with cumulative foreign direct investment (FDI) of US$34.8 billion by the end of 2025, and the second-largest source of net FDI flows at US$1.6 billion in that year.

The Think Business, Think Hong Kong campaign aims to deepen collaboration and provide Malaysian companies with the connections, expertise, and market access needed to pursue opportunities in regional and global markets.
