Japanese University Includes Gloria DeGaetano’s Book Excerpt in Textbook for Screen Influence Education

July 29, 2026

The Parent Coaching Institute (PCI) has announced that founder and CEO Gloria DeGaetano’s book “Screen Smarts” will be featured in a Japanese textbook published by Kwansei Gakuin University (KGU). The excerpt, titled “As Children Grow: Screen Influence,” will appear in two editions of the textbook, one current through 2027 and the other for the 2027-2029 term. The reprint includes a Japanese translation and explanation to help high school students understand the content and its grammatical nuances.

KGU, a prestigious institution based in the Kansai region with campuses in Nishinomiya, Sanda, Osaka, and Tokyo, selected the section to educate students about the effects of screen time on child development. The 2027-2029 edition is published in affiliation with KGU’s Schools of Theology, Sociology, Economics, International Studies, and Education. The publisher, Kyogakusha, based in Kyoto, specializes in compiling authentic university entrance exam papers to provide affordable study materials for high school students, particularly those aged around 17 who may lack access to private tutoring.

DeGaetano expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I am so honored that KGU had contacted me about this. They are a prestigious university who partners with 320 universities and 60 organizations around the world.” She emphasized the lasting relevance of her work, noting that the research in “Screen Smarts” remains valid despite advances in technology. “The more children stare into a two-dimensional flat surface, the less their brain develops optimally. Tech cannot do what sensory and lived experiences do to help little humans flourish,” she said, affirming that this message has been central to her work for over 30 years and is integral to the parent coach training program she developed.

The Parent Coaching Institute, founded by DeGaetano in 2000, is recognized as an innovative leader in family support. It offers a year-long, online Parent Coach Certification® program in affiliation with Southern New Hampshire University. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2026 Fall Term, with a deadline of September 1. Details and application forms are available at www.ThePCI.org.
