Tastingbook.com, a leading fine wine information service, has crowned Vellamo Mineral Water from Finland as the world’s best sparkling water after a rigorous blind tasting of 14 premium brands. The competition, which included established giants like S.Pellegrino, Evian Sparkling, and Voss, evaluated each water both solo and alongside gourmet dishes and fine wines. Vellamo’s exceptional palate-cleansing ability and creamy micro-bubble profile secured its top position, rewriting expectations for luxury dining water.
The tasting panel assessed 14 waters from around the globe, including Antipodes, Ty Nant, Perlage, San Benedetto, Solán de Cabras, Saratoga, ROI, Kuohu, Borjomi, and the traditional fine-dining staples S.Pellegrino and Evian Sparkling, as well as the design icon Voss. The two-stage methodology—first tasting the waters alone, then pairing them with food and wine—aimed to uncover each water’s optimal culinary purpose. According to the results published on tastingbook.com, Vellamo’s performance during the food pairings created a “massive, undeniable gap” between itself and all competitors.
Vellamo, sourced from the Salpausselkä glacial aquifers in Finland, is a natural mineral water that has been encapsulated for over 10,000 years, untouched by modern environmental factors. Its naturally high alkalinity cushions the carbon dioxide, resulting in a texturally rich, thick, and creamy micro-bubble profile. This structure allows it to strip away rich food oils and wine tannins, leaving a refreshing, subtly sweet finish. The water is housed in a globally awarded glass bottle designed to mimic a block of Nordic ice.
Second place went to Germany’s Nevas Water, described as the “Champagne of Waters” for its theatrical packaging and fine-beaded bubbles that mimic fine champagne. Nevas features a medium-mineral body that pairs well with heavy gourmet appetizers, truffles, and seafood. Third place was awarded to Norway’s Voss, known for its ultra-low Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and crisp neutrality. Voss acts as a transparent canvas that cleanses the palate without interfering with intricate spices or raw textures.
The tasting confirmed that traditional favorites like S.Pellegrino and Evian Sparkling remain historical benchmarks, offering dependable profiles. However, Vellamo’s ability to cut through rich foods and reset the palate between wines without losing its silky alkaline character proved decisive. The verdict emphasizes that the modern luxury dining table requires specific structural profiles, and Vellamo has set a new standard for gastronomic harmony.
