With record-low water levels disrupting portions of the Danube River and the Rhine also approaching historic lows, travelers preparing for upcoming Viking River Cruises are facing an urgent question: what should they do if their cruise is leaving soon? Heather Viking, Director of the Viking Division at Club Cruise™, advises passengers to prepare, remain flexible, and avoid making expensive decisions based solely on news headlines.
“The biggest Viking mistake right now would be canceling a cruise before knowing what Viking plans to do with your specific departure,” Heather said. “River conditions can vary dramatically by location, and they can change quickly. Travelers need information about their ship, sailing date and itinerary—not a photograph or report from another country.”
The Associated Press reported July 30 that extended drought and extreme heat had pushed portions of the Danube to record-low levels. The Rhine was also nearing record lows in Germany, although navigation was continuing with restrictions in some areas. According to Reuters, cargo vessels on the Rhine were operating with reduced loads due to low water.
Heather recommends that travelers departing within the next several weeks take several key steps. First, do not cancel based only on the news, as voluntary cancellation may be subject to normal terms and penalties. Instead, wait until you understand Viking’s operating plan for your specific sailing. “A changed docking location, motorcoach transfer or ship swap does not necessarily mean the entire vacation has been lost,” she noted.
Second, monitor your specific Viking reservation by reviewing email, voicemail, and My Viking Journey regularly. Pay attention to notices about embarkation or disembarkation locations, revised meeting points, changes to airport transfers, modified ports or excursions, ship substitutions, and updated luggage instructions. Third, contact the travel advisor who holds the booking. Travelers booked through Club Cruise should contact Heather Viking’s team as soon as a material change is received. Those who booked directly should contact Viking, ask specific questions, and retain copies of all communications.
“Do not rely on social media speculation when the answer may be sitting inside your actual reservation,” Heather said.
When a Viking ship cannot pass due to low water, the response depends on the location and duration of the restriction. Operational changes may include a revised docking location with motorcoach transportation, a modified itinerary, excursions operated by motorcoach, a temporary land transfer, or a ship swap. In a ship swap, compatible vessels are positioned on opposite sides of the affected section, and guests travel by motorcoach to rejoin a sister ship. When same-day transfer is not practical, the cruise line arranges lodging, meals, and transportation.
Heather emphasizes that river conditions are not completely predictable. Michele Saegesser, Viking’s Senior Vice President of Sales, has noted that sudden summer rainfall in the mountains can change river levels within a short period. “Today’s measurement is important, but it is not a guaranteed forecast for a sailing two or three weeks away,” Heather said. “A major mountain rain event can improve conditions, while continued heat and drought can make them worse.”
Viking’s scale provides advantages during disruptions. With 89 river vessels at the end of 2025, including 59 Longships, the company has more options for vessel positioning and replacement capacity. Standardized Longships allow guests to move to a sister ship while retaining a familiar layout. In 2022, 14 percent of Viking’s Rhine sailings involved ship swaps, and guest-quality ratings on those departures were comparable to unaffected sailings.
“That is one reason I recommend Viking,” Heather said. “Its scale, similar ships and operational experience give it alternatives that may not be available to a company with only one or two vessels operating on a route.”
