Parker Publishers has announced the upcoming release of Between Sirens and Silence: Life After Policing, a memoir by Jason Palmi that promises an unflinching look at the psychological toll of a career in law enforcement and the difficult path to rediscovering purpose. The book, set for release on November 4, 2026, draws on Palmi’s 31 years with the Sacramento Police Department and his subsequent transition into academia.
Palmi, who served from 1986 to 2017, worked in patrol, as an academy instructor, and at the department’s Emergency Vehicle Operations Center. His narrative follows a trajectory that many in the profession may find familiar: an initial sense of calling, a prolonged period of burnout and disengagement, and an eventual return to purpose. The title itself reflects the silence that descends not only at retirement but at the end of each shift, when officers return home and try to set the day aside.
The memoir is directed at several audiences: officers who have lost their footing in the work, those considering entering the profession, and the families who bear much of the weight of the job. Palmi writes candidly about his own experiences with burnout, self-doubt, and career dissatisfaction, and emphasizes the role that a support system—and in his case, his faith—played in helping him navigate the difficult years.

After retiring, Palmi moved to Montgomery, Texas, completed a master’s degree at Sam Houston State University, and began teaching Criminal Justice, first at Sacramento City College and later at Sam Houston State, where he continues to teach. His academic background adds an analytical layer to the memoir, bridging personal experience with broader insights into the criminal justice system.
