AirNode Deploys Sovereign AI Inside Southeastern Utility’s Security Perimeter

AirNode.AI, a developer of secure AI infrastructure for regulated industries, has begun its first deployment with an unnamed Southeastern U.S. utility, placing a sovereign AI system entirely within the operator’s security boundary. The move addresses a critical gap: organizations like electric utilities, which have the most to gain from AI, are often structurally prevented from using cloud-based services due to data sensitivity and regulatory constraints.

“AirNode’s approach is to remove the cloud from the equation rather than trying to secure the pathway to it,” said Jonathan Herman, Co-Founder and CEO of AirNode. “Our full-stack solutions run local compute and model inference on-premise, retrieve over the customer’s own knowledge base, and provide secure workflows with role-based access control and full audit logging.”

This architecture ensures that data never leaves the utility’s boundary. By keeping model weights and inference local, the platform enables advanced AI applications without exposing operational data to external networks. The system is deliberately scoped to tasks such as cybersecurity compliance, inspection readiness, critical document review, policy and procedure analysis, training support, and engineering summaries. It is not designed to control plant systems or safety guardrails, maintaining a clear separation from operational technology.

The deployment follows heightened industry focus on safe AI adoption. On August 5th, Herman moderated the “AI for Energy Resilience” panel at the Ai4 2026 Conference. He is also ranked among the Top 100 People in Artificial Intelligence by Crunchbase.

The energy sector serves as AirNode’s beachhead, with expansion planned into finance, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and government—sectors where compliance and safe deployment are paramount. AirNode is building what it calls the Secure AI Infrastructure Platform for regulated industries, offering a customer-controlled, air-gapped architecture that eliminates cloud exposure and external network paths.

By addressing the structural barriers that have kept regulated institutions from leveraging AI, AirNode’s deployment could signal a shift in how critical infrastructure operators adopt artificial intelligence.
