United in Peace Rides Aim to Bridge Divides Across Los Angeles Communities

LOS ANGELES — For over 14 years, United in Peace has organized monthly Peace Rides that traverse neighborhoods across Los Angeles and surrounding areas, aiming to bridge cultural, racial, and faith-based divides. These processions, involving motorcyclists, low-riders, clergy, and community leaders, are not merely displays; they are interactive events designed to engage residents and spark dialogue.

Each ride travels through communities that have experienced violence or division, distributing peace-oriented materials such as The Way to Happiness booklet and the Million Man March pledge. The organization’s goal is to help people see each other as members of the same community, challenging perceptions that separate them and fostering understanding, respect, and cooperation.

The rides culminate in a Peace Festival, where participants and residents gather to celebrate with performances in hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and local talent. United in Peace describes this as “edutainment”—a blend of education, community engagement, and entertainment—creating an environment conducive to meaningful connections.

The initiative has gained support from the Los Angeles Police Department, which assists with safety along designated routes. During the rides, residents often come out to wave, make peace signs, and show support, reflecting the growing familiarity of the events within the communities they visit.

Over its 14-year history, the United in Peace Foundation, a multiethnic and multi-faith movement, has distributed more than 70,000 copies of The Way to Happiness and reached an estimated 2.4 million people through events and media coverage. The organization points to encouraging trends in violence reduction, noting that an LAPD captain observed violent death rates in South Los Angeles decreased by as much as 40% during the same period. While acknowledging multiple contributing factors, United in Peace believes its sustained efforts play a meaningful role in promoting unity and peaceful cooperation.

Recognition has come from mayors and members of Congress, who have issued commendations and proclamations for the organization’s work. United in Peace welcomes partnerships with organizations, community groups, congregations, and individuals committed to building safer, more connected communities. Nonprofits promoting peace or providing local services can apply to host informational booths at the monthly festivals.
