California Artist Leonard Bermudez’s Legacy Reopens to Public After 15 Years

The Estate of Leonard Bermudez, a California painter and sculptor who passed away in 2010, is opening its doors to the public for the first time in over fifteen years. The initiative, led by his son Edward Bermudez, aims to preserve and advance the artist’s legacy by documenting his lifetime of work, rebuilding awareness of his exhibition history, and creating opportunities for his art to be seen, studied, and exhibited once again.

The public unveiling will take place on Thursday, September 3, 2026, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at The Braly at The Continental in Downtown Los Angeles, as part of DTLA ArtNight, a monthly cultural event that attracts thousands of visitors to more than 50 galleries, museums, and creative venues across the city.

Bermudez led a dual life, working as an aerospace professional at Lockheed’s Skunk Works on programs like the SR-71 Blackbird and F-117 Stealth Fighter, while simultaneously pursuing his artistic passion. A self-taught artist, he worked in oil, pencil, metal sculpture, and photography, drawing inspiration from Dalí, Rivera, Monet, Picasso, and Pollock. His art, which he described as “Metallic Reflections,” explored the interplay of organic forms, polished metal, light, and reflection.

His surviving records show an active exhibition history spanning more than three decades, including shows at the Beverly Hills Art Show, Palm Springs Art Show, and numerous solo exhibitions in Southern California. His public art projects include the Unity Mural at Panorama Mall and the Freedom Mural at Pacoima Elementary.

The Estate is now inviting galleries, museums, curators, and collectors to engage with Bermudez’s work, with the goal of placing his contributions within a broader artistic and cultural context. While some pieces may be available for acquisition, the primary mission is to ensure his art is seen and appreciated.

The upcoming exhibition at DTLA ArtNight offers a first glimpse into this legacy, introducing Bermudez’s unique vision to a new generation of art enthusiasts.
