(NASDAQ: SMTK) has welcomed an announcement from its proposed merger partner, Ferrox Critical Materials, regarding an accelerated development program for the Tivani Project in Limpopo, South Africa. The program targets a working demonstration-scale processing circuit by the fourth quarter of 2026, a move that could significantly shorten the timeline to production for the critical minerals project.

The revised pathway combines on-site ore preparation and wash-plant infrastructure with a toll-milling arrangement with a local South African operator. The demonstration program is expected to produce an ilmenite concentrate grading approximately 56% TiO2 and a magnetite concentrate grading approximately 62% Fe, subject to commissioning, metallurgical performance, and final operating parameters. These grades are indicative of the project’s potential to supply high-quality feedstocks for the titanium dioxide and iron markets.

Ferrox is advancing construction of a wash plant and related site preparation at Tivani, while also issuing a purchase order to Sound Mining to optimize the project’s open-pit mine plan, including mining sequences and production scheduling. This optimization is critical to ensuring efficient extraction and processing as the project moves toward its demonstration phase.

The accelerated demonstration program is intended to establish operating data, product quality, and initial sales capability ahead of a larger permanent processing build-out. According to Ferrox, this approach provides a potential bridge from the current development phase to larger-scale modular production, reducing the risk and capital expenditure typically associated with a full-scale plant before proven operational performance.
