Frontieras North America and Western Fuels Plan Wyoming Coal Conversion Facility

Frontieras North America and Western Fuels have announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a mine-mouth FASForm(TM) processing facility at the Dry Fork Mine near Gillette, Wyoming. The proposed facility aims to utilize Frontieras’ patented FASForm(TM) technology to convert coal into ultra-low-sulfur diesel, naphtha, and FASCarbon(TM), a product that could be sold to utilities or international markets.

The MOU outlines long-term agreements that include a facility site, coal feedstock supply of up to approximately 2.7 million tons annually initially, and up to 5.4 million tons at full build-out. Western Fuels would purchase ultra-low-sulfur diesel produced at the facility, and the partnership may leverage Western Fuels Association’s transportation capabilities to move FASForm(TM) product streams.

This agreement is a strategic step for Frontieras North America to scale its technology across Wyoming and the West through mine-mouth facilities and its FASGEN(TM) co-location platform for coal-fired power plants. The FASForm(TM) process is a continuous, closed-loop system that converts coal into valuable products, aligning with the company’s mission to redefine coal utilization.

The significance of this development lies in its potential to provide a sustainable pathway for coal in the energy transition. By producing clean fuels and chemicals from coal, the facility could help reduce emissions while maintaining economic benefits for coal-dependent regions. For Western Fuels, which represents rural electric cooperatives and other members, the project offers a way to secure a local source of ultra-low-sulfur diesel and potentially utilize FASCarbon(TM) for their operations.

The location in Wyoming, a major coal-producing state, underscores the project’s importance in supporting communities that have relied on coal mining. The Dry Fork Mine is already operational, and the facility could create jobs and diversify the local economy.

Frontieras North America, headquartered in Houston, Texas, is constructing its first commercial-scale facility in Mason County, West Virginia. The company holds an international patent portfolio spanning five continents, indicating the global applicability of its technology.
