Asia’s leading flower trading hub, the Dounan Flower Market in Kunming, Yunnan Province, is setting new benchmarks in trading scale and logistics efficiency, according to recent reports. The market, which handles approximately 70% of China’s fresh-cut flowers, has recorded significant growth in trading volumes and international reach.
In 2025, Dounan traded 15.476 billion fresh-cut flowers with a total value of 13.484 billion yuan (about $2 billion). The market hosts over 3,300 enterprises and more than 15,000 business entities, with 46,500 of its 70,000 residents employed in the flower industry. Its distribution network spans across China and over 50 countries and regions, including Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia.
The Kunming International Flora Auction Trading Center, a key platform within Dounan, operates a high-speed descending-price auction system. Buyers bid as prices decrease on electronic screens, with transactions completed in as little as 0.6 seconds. This rapid process is crucial for perishable goods, facilitating quick circulation from auction to shipment.
“Since fresh flowers are perishable goods, we use a descending-price auction format. This helps facilitate rapid circulation,” said Li Qian, a flower auctioneer at the center. The auction system is integrated with sorting, packaging, and transportation, reducing time between trade and dispatch.
The market experienced a surge in activity ahead of the Qixi Festival, China’s Valentine’s Day, with tens of millions of stems sold domestically and internationally. During this peak, average prices for major fresh-cut flowers rose to 1.1 to 1.3 yuan per stem, about 15% higher than pre-festival levels. Premium roses fetched nearly 15 yuan ($2.23) per stem.
Logistics are a critical component of Dounan’s operations, given the perishable nature of flowers. Tang Minghong, a client manager with SF Express Yunnan’s flower logistics division, highlighted that fresh flowers have some of the most demanding logistics requirements. Trading begins in the afternoon, with pickup, packaging, and dispatch completed by 3:00 a.m., allowing flowers to swiftly enter distribution networks. For international shipments, logistics routes to destinations such as Singapore, South Korea, and Malaysia ensure delivery within two days.
The combination of large-scale production, centralized trading, high-speed auctions, and integrated logistics has enabled Dounan to develop a comprehensive supply chain. This network connects growers in Yunnan with buyers globally, supporting the province’s fresh-cut flower industry expansion into international markets.
As Dounan continues to break records in trading volume and efficiency, it is solidifying its position as a regional hub for flower trading and distribution, contributing significantly to China’s global flower industry growth.
