International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a major contract to modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube, Slovakia’s largest hydroelectric facility. The project, commissioned by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA, is a strategic investment in the country’s energy infrastructure, aimed at ensuring reliable and sustainable electricity generation for the long term.
Gabcikovo currently accounts for approximately 10% of Slovakia’s electricity production, underscoring its critical role in the national grid. The comprehensive modernization will involve the gradual refurbishment of the plant’s eight Kaplan turbine-generator units, bringing them up to the latest technical standards. The goal is to improve efficiency and availability while extending the technical service life of key operating equipment by at least 30 years.
The scope of supply includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. It also covers modernization of turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. The work will be carried out sequentially to maintain availability during the modernization and minimize impact on ongoing operations.
The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the third quarter of 2026. This investment reflects the growing importance of upgrading existing hydropower assets to enhance their performance and extend their operational lifespan, contributing to the stability of renewable energy supply in Europe.
