The Georgia Latino Film Alliance (GALFA) announced that Academy Award-nominated Mexican actress Yalitza Aparicio will receive the Georgia Latino Film Alliance Icon Award during the 15th Annual Georgia Latino International Film Festival (GALIFF XV), scheduled for September 30 through October 4, 2026, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.
The Icon Award recognizes individuals whose careers and influence have significantly advanced Latino culture in film and entertainment. Aparicio, known for her breakthrough role in Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, a milestone for Mexican and Latino representation in global cinema. Her work has brought visibility to Latino talent and inspired audiences worldwide.
Yvette Moïse, President and Co-Founder of GALFA, emphasized the award’s broader significance: “Yalitza Aparicio represents the power of cinema to transcend borders, elevate our culture, and allow our stories to be seen around the world. The GALFA Icon Award is not simply about one performance or one moment. The award presentation will coincide with GALIFF’s milestone XV anniversary, with Mexico serving as the Guest Country of Honor. For fifteen years, GALIFF and GALFA have worked to create opportunities for Latino filmmakers, actors, producers, students, and entertainment professionals, bridging Georgia’s film industry with the international Latino creative community.
The Icon Award will be presented during GALIFF XV Opening Night on September 30, 2026, at the historic Fox Theatre. The festival will feature screenings and events across Atlanta from October 1-4.
