Eagle Scout Jim Valentine’s Debut Novel ‘Wabaningo’ Captures the Lasting Power of Boy Scout Values

Heritage Book Publishing has released Wabaningo, the debut novel by Eagle Scout Jim Valentine. The book draws on Valentine’s experience at a Boy Scout camp in Western Michigan in 1950, when he was twelve years old. That summer, he stepped off an olive-green Army surplus truck at Camp Wabaningo, carrying a mixture of excitement and fear about the two weeks ahead. Seventy-six years later, he has transformed that pivotal summer into a work of fiction that explores how the values learned in scouting can guide a person through life’s unexpected twists and turns.

“Every passage to the new environment was a fork in the road of life,” Valentine reflects, quoting Yogi Berra’s famous saying: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it…” to which he adds his own life philosophy: “Take whichever fork you want because it’s up to you to be happy.”

The novel follows Jimmie and his fellow scouts as they navigate the challenges of camp life, from mastering swimming and canoeing to earning marksmanship badges and participating in the mysterious Order of the Arrow ceremony. While the narrative captures the joy and adventure of summer camp, it also explores deeper themes of bullying, self-doubt, and finding one’s place.

Wabaningo arrives at a moment when many young people seek meaning and connection in an increasingly digital world. The novel demonstrates how structured outdoor experiences, mentorship, and peer support can help build strength, empathy, and leadership skills. Valentine’s story serves as a reminder that the lessons learned in scouting—teamwork, perseverance, and moral courage—remain relevant today.

Jim Valentine was born in Chicago in 1938. He served in the Army after graduating from Knox College in 1961 and spent his career in management roles at Union Special Machine Company before founding Valentine Enterprises in 1993. He sold his company in 2024 after 31 successful years. Valentine is a community leader who has served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Chicago Knox College Club, president of the Knox College Alumni Association, founder and president of the Siwash Athletic Club, and recipient of the Knox College Service Award.
