Doug Kroeker has spent most of his adult life teaching the Bible. His new book, A Walkthrough of the Bible, released by Writers of the West, takes a different approach: rather than examining passages in isolation, it presents the entire biblical library as a single, cohesive story.
The book spans from Genesis to Revelation in eight chapters, treating the 66 books as interconnected rather than separate. Kroeker begins with structure, explaining how the Bible holds together, its authorship by more than 40 writers across roughly 15 centuries, and why the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament arrange the same material differently. He then moves through major eras: Creation, the Patriarchs, the Exodus, the Conquest, the Kingdom, the Exile, and the return. The prophets, the four Gospels, and Paul’s letters are explored in their historical and pastoral contexts. Doctrines such as sin, salvation, and the church’s mission are woven into one continuous arc.
Kroeker wrote the book for readers who may know isolated stories but lack a broader framework. “I wrote this book because I came to realize that understanding the Bible is not always as easy as those of us who grew up in the church might assume,” he said. “Bible stories have been part of our lives for as long as we can remember. We learned about Noah and the ark, Abraham and Isaac, David and Goliath and so on when we were children. Over the years, those stories became familiar to us, and that familiarity gave us a foundation but not everyone has that foundation. Not everyone has grown up in church. They were never taught the stories that we take for granted. When they hear a reference to the Exodus or Promised Land, they may have little idea where those events belong in the Bible or why they even matter. I wanted to write something that would help those who are new to the Bible and as an overview to those who are familiar with it.”
