Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has completed a strategic equity investment by the U.S. Department of War totaling approximately US$35.6 million, the company announced. The investment was made across transactions with Trilogy and South32 Limited, its joint venture partner. The full proceeds have been committed to Ambler Metals LLC, the 50/50 joint venture between Trilogy and South32, to advance exploration and development of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. The UKMP includes the high-grade Arctic polymetallic deposit and the Bornite copper-cobalt deposit.
In addition to the equity investment, the Department of War committed to work in good faith to help facilitate financing for construction of the proposed 211-mile Ambler Road, in coordination with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority. The road is considered critical infrastructure for accessing the remote Ambler Mining District, which is known for its rich copper-dominant mineral deposits.
The UKMP is located within the Ambler Mining District, described by Trilogy as one of the richest and most prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. It hosts polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration has focused on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, providing a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy Metals’ vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
The U.S. government’s investment underscores the strategic importance of domestic critical minerals. Copper and cobalt are essential for renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, and defense applications. By funding exploration and potentially enabling the Ambler Road, the investment aims to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign sources of these minerals and support economic development in Alaska.
