Baolai Steel Highlights FBE, 3LPE and 3LPP Coatings for Pipeline Corrosion Protection

External corrosion poses a significant threat to steel pipelines exposed to soil, moisture, chemicals, and mechanical damage. Selecting the appropriate external coating is critical for ensuring pipeline longevity and operational safety. Baolai Steel, a Chinese steel pipe manufacturer, has outlined key considerations for choosing among fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE), three-layer polyethylene (3LPE), and three-layer polypropylene (3LPP) coatings, emphasizing that the decision must be based on the complete service environment rather than coating type alone.

FBE forms a tightly bonded epoxy layer directly on prepared steel, providing a continuous corrosion barrier without a thick thermoplastic outer layer. It is suitable for many buried oil, gas, and water pipelines, particularly where corrosion resistance and compatibility with cathodic protection are important. However, because single-layer FBE generally offers less resistance to mechanical damage than three-layer systems, careful handling during transportation and installation is essential.

3LPE adds an adhesive layer and a polyethylene outer layer over the FBE corrosion barrier. This combination delivers enhanced resistance to moisture, impact, abrasion, and handling damage, making it a common choice for buried pipelines that will undergo demanding installation operations such as trenching and backfilling. 3LPP follows a similar structure but uses a polypropylene outer layer, which is generally selected for higher service temperatures or more demanding mechanical conditions.

The choice between these systems should consider operating temperature, soil conditions, transportation and installation methods, mechanical damage risk, cathodic protection design, and applicable project specifications. For exposed piping applications, hot-dip galvanizing or painted finishes may be more appropriate, as they serve different purposes such as structural protection or identification.

Coating performance also depends on proper application and inspection. Baolai Steel’s quality control includes surface preparation checks, coating thickness measurement, visual examination, and holiday detection to identify discontinuities. Pipe-end conditions, such as uncoated cutback areas for field welding, are verified against order requirements, and repaired areas are reinspected before shipment. Relevant inspection records, test reports, and third-party documentation can be provided for project review.

Baolai Steel coordinates steel pipe manufacturing with coating, secondary processing, inspection, and export support, allowing more stages of a coated-pipe order to be managed through one supply process. Processing options include beveling, threading, grooving, cutting, marking, bending, and galvanizing. This integrated approach helps align base-pipe production, coating, processing, inspection, and shipment with the same technical and commercial requirements.

For buyers, a clear coating specification is essential. It should define the pipe standard and grade, dimensions, coating system, required thickness, applicable coating standard, operating environment, and any special requirements for pipe ends, inspection, or documentation. By specifying these conditions at the quotation stage, buyers can ensure that the steel pipe, coating system, inspection program, and documentation meet actual project needs.

Founded in 1991, Baolai Steel Group supplies steel pipe for pipeline, water transmission, energy, construction, fire protection, and other industrial projects. With annual production capacity of approximately 5 million tons, the company supports international orders where specification control, coating quality, and coordinated delivery are important.
