Frontieras North America has selected Kiewit Engineering Group Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, to perform Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) for its flagship facility in Mason County, West Virginia. The announcement marks a significant step in the commercialization of the company’s FASForm™ Solid Carbon Fractionation process, which converts coal and other hydrocarbon feedstocks into higher-value commercial products without combustion.
The FEED work has already begun and will advance engineering and constructability studies as Frontieras continues developing the facility. Frontieras retains ownership and direction of its FASForm™ technology, with co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Joe Witherspoon serving as central project manager and directing the process design. Kiewit will provide engineering, constructability and cost development alongside the design, working toward a lump-sum proposal for the facility.
The selection of Kiewit, a major engineering and construction firm, lends credibility to Frontieras’ efforts to deploy its technology at commercial scale. The Mason County facility is designed to produce higher-value products from coal without burning it, a departure from traditional coal-fired power generation. The company is also commercializing the Witherspoon Method™, a patent-pending process for producing ammonium sulfate fertilizer, which could address growing global demand for fertilizer.
For West Virginia, a state with a long history of coal production, the project could signal a new avenue for using the region’s coal resources. Instead of combustion, the FASForm™ process fractionates solid carbon, potentially reducing emissions associated with traditional coal use while creating commercial products. The fertilizer component could also support agricultural supply chains.
