LION Smart Production GmbH, a subsidiary of LION E-Mobility AG, has won three additional stationary battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Germany, each with a capacity of 10 MWh, for a total of 30 MWh. The projects, announced in the third quarter of 2026, are scheduled to be completed and connected to the grid in the first quarter of 2027. The wins underscore the growing demand for large-scale battery storage as Germany expands renewable energy and seeks grid flexibility.
The three projects cover distinct applications. One 10 MWh system will be co-located with an existing photovoltaic plant. A second 10 MWh project combines a battery storage system with a new photovoltaic installation. The third is a standalone 10 MWh storage project. These configurations highlight the versatility of stationary battery storage, which can be paired with renewable generation or operated independently to provide grid services and arbitrage.
LION Smart acts as a system integrator, delivering tailor-made storage solutions that cover the entire project lifecycle: consulting, system design, engineering, integration, commissioning, and ongoing service and maintenance. Each container is approved by an in-house engineering team according to European quality standards, and the company backs its systems with performance guarantees. The company reports strong interest from independent power producers, solar and wind plant operators, traditional utilities, and municipal utilities.
Beyond project sales, LION Smart is developing a “BESS as a Service” offering aimed at operators of photovoltaic and wind farms. This model would allow operators to use a battery storage system without making their own investment in the storage asset, while generating additional storage revenues alongside income from renewable energy. LION Smart would assume the technical risk and provide service for the system. The company plans to present this offering at the Solar Plus Forum on 24–25 November 2026 in Berlin. The project wins matter because they demonstrate LION Smart’s ability to scale in a competitive market and address the need for energy storage as renewable penetration rises. By offering both custom integration and a service-based model, the company is positioning itself to capture demand from utilities and independent power producers that seek to enhance grid stability and capture additional revenue streams. LION E-Mobility AG, founded in 2011, manufactures lithium-ion battery packs for electric vehicles and stationary applications. Its shares are listed on the Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg stock exchanges. LION Smart GmbH, the unit responsible for the BESS business, provides battery storage solutions and engineering services, including a previously introduced 5 MWh container solution. As Germany pushes toward its renewable energy targets, projects like these are critical for integrating solar and wind power and maintaining grid reliability.
