The eyewear industry is pivoting toward artificial intelligence and health-focused design, and the 34th Hong Kong International Optical Fair is positioning itself at the center of that transition. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association, the fair will run from 4 to 6 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre under the theme “Bright Eyes · New Horizons,” gathering more than 600 exhibitors from 14 countries and regions.
The stakes are evident in the numbers. HKTDC Associate Executive Director Smilely Lam noted that AI-powered smart glasses recorded global shipments of 8.7 million units last year, a 322% year-on-year increase. Market research cited in the announcement reinforces that momentum: IDC reported 3.566 million smart glasses shipped in the first quarter of 2026, up 130.1% year-on-year, while Omdia put global AI eyewear shipments at 8.7 million units in 2025. The figures suggest smart eyewear is moving from niche gadgetry toward mainstream adoption, with implications for manufacturers, retailers and health-care providers alike.
The fair’s product lineup reflects that shift. Exhibitors will present smart glasses equipped with augmented reality, AI voice assistants, real-time translation, 4K recording and navigation functions. Among the featured products are the INMO AIR3 SMART Glasses, which combine AI and AR with a Sony Micro OLED display and a ChatGPT-powered assistant, and the GSPRO AI Glasses from GetD, which add neck-health monitoring and fall detection with emergency alerts. For older consumers, the fair highlights the so-called silver economy, including the Intelligence Presbyopia Glass (U10) that automatically adjusts focal length, and Gemini Progressive Lenses designed to reduce peripheral distortion.
Beyond gadgets, the fair underscores broader industry currents. Sports and functional eyewear, sustainability-focused products and green manufacturing technologies will be on display. The 24th Hong Kong International Optometric Symposium on 5 November will bring experts from the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States to discuss paediatric eye care, digital eye strain, dry eye management and collaborative care between optometrists and ophthalmologists. The 26th Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition will also hold its award ceremony on opening day, with a new Technology Concept Award for student participants.
For trade buyers, the event offers a one-stop sourcing platform. Pre-registered buyers from retailers and distributors worldwide, including Capitol Optical in Singapore, Eyespace Eyewear in the UK and Vision Plus in the US, signal strong international demand. The fair will again adopt the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model, with the Click2Match platform running until 13 November to extend business matching beyond the physical show. Full event details are available on the Hong Kong International Optical Fair website, and the fair programme lists forums and seminars on smart eyewear and testing and certification. The 24th Hong Kong International Optometric Symposium details are also published online.
The fair’s emphasis on smart technology, the silver economy, fashion, active lifestyles and sustainability points to an industry reshaping itself around demographic and technological change. For Hong Kong, the event reinforces its role as a regional sourcing hub at a moment when eyewear is becoming less about correction and more about connected, health-monitoring wearables.
