Trilogy Metals Inc. announced the successful completion of its 2026 summer field program at the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in northwestern Alaska, achieving all priority objectives. The program was carried out by Ambler Metals, the company’s 50/50 joint venture with South32 Limited.
Ambler Metals completed 42 geotechnical, hydrogeological, condemnation and exploration drill holes totaling approximately 5,200 meters to support mine design, infrastructure planning and permitting at the Arctic Project. The work also included exploration target assessments along a 100-kilometer volcanogenic massive sulfide belt to guide drilling priorities for 2027.
The completion of the field program matters because it provides critical engineering and environmental data needed to advance the Arctic Project through permitting. The drill results will inform mine design and infrastructure planning, while the VMS belt assessment sets the stage for next year’s exploration campaign.
In a related move, Ambler Metals appointed David Thomas, a mining industry veteran with more than 40 years of experience, as senior vice president of project development to lead engineering and development at Arctic. Thomas’s appointment signals the joint venture’s focus on moving the project toward construction readiness.
Trilogy anticipates increased exploration and development activity in 2027, with a draft environmental impact statement targeted for October 2027 and a record of decision targeted for September 2028. Those milestones are key for investors because they represent the final regulatory steps before the project could receive permits to proceed.
The Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects are located within the Ambler Mining District, which Trilogy describes as one of the richest and most-prospective known copper-dominant districts in the world. It hosts polymetallic VMS deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Exploration has focused on the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
Ambler Metals has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, that provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy’s stated vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods.
For investors, the completion of the field program and the appointment of a seasoned project development leader reduce execution risk as the company moves toward the permitting phase.
