A study by Comfort First Heating & Cooling of the 1991-2020 U.S. Climate Normals reveals that about two-thirds of Sanford’s normal outdoor-temperature heating demand occurs after Christmas. The analysis, which examined daily heating-degree-day normals at the Sanford 8 NE weather station, found that the period from December 26 to June 30 accounts for 64.4% of the station’s normal July-June total, compared with 19.6% before December (July 1-November 30).
The findings indicate that Sanford has 3.28 times as much normal heating demand after Christmas as before December. Even after adjusting for the different lengths of the two windows, the after-Christmas period has 2.69 times the normal heating degree days per calendar day. The pattern is consistent across North Carolina: all 48 stations in the qualified panel have a larger after-Christmas share than before-December share, with a median after-Christmas share of 64.9%.
Raleigh-Durham International Airport shows a similar trend, with 65.5% of its normal heating demand falling after Christmas compared with 18.6% before December. Cape Hatteras AP has the highest after-Christmas share at 73.4%, while Mt Mitchell has the lowest at 62.1%. “Sanford’s figures put the seasonal calendar in perspective,” said Adam Hagen, general manager at Comfort First Heating & Cooling. “About two-thirds of the normal outdoor-temperature heating demand falls after Christmas. Homeowners can keep that longer view in mind when planning around the holidays, while remembering that the weather in an individual winter can differ from the historical pattern.”
The study’s release coincides with the start of North Carolina’s heating season, offering homeowners a data-driven reference for understanding when heating needs are likely to be greatest. The analysis is based on historical climate normals and does not forecast conditions for the upcoming winter, nor does it predict household energy use or costs. Comfort First Heating & Cooling provides HVAC services in Sanford and the Triangle area.
The company, founded in 2010, offers heating, cooling, plumbing, indoor air quality, and generator services across several North Carolina regions. More information is available at yourcomfortfirst.com.
