American Heart Association Expands Online Support Network for Heart and Stroke Survivors

The American Heart Association has expanded its free online community, the Support Network, to provide more personalized ways for patients, survivors, and caregivers to connect and find support throughout their health journeys. The announcement coincides with National Family Caregivers Month in November, highlighting the importance of community for those affected by heart disease and stroke, including caregivers.

The Support Network offers a space for members to share stories, ask questions, and exchange encouragement as their needs evolve. “When I experienced multiple heart attacks, I quickly learned that recovery involves much more than healing physically. I needed connection with people who have experienced similar challenges,” said David Thomas, a heart attack survivor and Support Network member from Medford Lakes, New Jersey. “I found a community where I could share my story, ask questions and speak openly with people who understood the physical and emotional impact of a heart event. The compassion and encouragement helped me feel understood, supported and heard. No one should have to navigate recovery alone.”

The expansion includes features that allow members to connect one-on-one with people who share similar lived experiences, join discussions on heart and stroke topics, and discover virtual and in-person support groups, events, and educational opportunities. Members can also explore resources for immediate needs and broader well-being, and share their own experiences to help others. Healthcare professionals can refer patients, survivors, and caregivers to the network for peer connection and trusted information beyond clinical settings.

“Caring for your health includes both your physical health and your overall well-being. Meaningful connections with people who understand what you’re going through can be an important source of support,” said Glenn Levine, M.D., American Heart Association volunteer and professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. “Whether someone is adjusting to a diagnosis, managing a health condition or caring for a loved one, connecting with others who share similar experiences can bring understanding, encouragement and a sense of belonging.”

The importance of such support is underscored by the challenges of recovery. Resources like the American Heart Association’s Caregiver Support and Life After a Heart Attack guides, along with the Life After Stroke guide, provide essential information for navigating life after a cardiovascular event. The Support Network complements these resources by offering emotional support and shared experience 24/7.

For those seeking connection, the Support Network is accessible at Heart.org/SupportNetwork. Additional information about the American Heart Association is available at heart.org and stroke.org. A Spanish-language news release is also available.
