HKTDC Marks 60th Anniversary with Forum on Hong Kong’s Future, Attracts Over 1,000 Leaders

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) marked its 60th anniversary with the Next 60 Forum and a cocktail reception on June 17, drawing over 1,000 guests from the political and business sectors. The events brought together multiple former chairmen to reflect on the council’s development and chart a path forward for Hong Kong.

HKTDC Chairman Prof Frederick Ma moderated the forum, which featured former chairmen Dr Victor Fung, Peter Woo, Jack So and Vincent Lo. Baroness Dunn delivered a pre-recorded address to open the event. The forum reviewed Hong Kong’s transformation from a manufacturing base into an international financial and trading hub, and explored how the city can continue to serve as a superconnector and super value-adder in a changing global landscape.

Prof Ma emphasized the significance of the gathering, noting that the forum brought together 480 years of accumulated experience and wisdom. ‘We will build on the past and pave the way for the future, charting a new development outlook for Hong Kong,’ he said. ‘Under ‘One Country, Two Systems’, Hong Kong is guided by national development and is globally responsive, providing a strong foundation for progress.’ He added that the HKTDC will continue to assist enterprises going global, deepen international exchange, and facilitate substantive cooperation.

The evening cocktail reception was officiated by Secretary for Justice Paul Lam, who joined leaders from various sectors. Other notable attendees included Deputy Commissioner Li Yongsheng of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, Director-General Xu Weigang of the Liaison Office’s Economic Affairs Department, Legislative Council President Starry Lee, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law, and Acting Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Joseph Chan. Former chairmen and executive directors also attended.

Secretary for Justice Paul Lam highlighted the HKTDC’s role in advancing Hong Kong’s trade and economic development over six decades. ‘In Chinese culture, 60 years represents the completion of a full cycle – it does not mark an end, but a beginning of new cycle,’ he said. ‘It reminds us that after six decades of growth, wisdom and achievements, the time has come to welcome a new, and even more successful chapter.’

Looking ahead, the HKTDC plans to seize opportunities from the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan, support government initiatives, and assist mainland enterprises in expanding overseas. The council will provide tailored support to five major industry clusters: Finance and Professional Services; Global Network and Supply Chain; Technology and Digital Innovation; Wellness and Creative Industries; and Consumer Goods and Lifestyle.
