July is National Ice Cream Month, and The Dairy Alliance, a nonprofit organization funded by dairy farm families in the Southeast, is encouraging consumers to explore homemade frozen dairy desserts. The organization is sharing recipes that use real dairy milk and cream, highlighting the versatility and quality of dairy in treats like ice cream, gelato, frozen custard, frozen yogurt, and sherbet.
Ice cream, which must contain at least 10 percent milk fat and be quickly churned for a light, fluffy texture, sets the standard for frozen dairy desserts. Gelato, frozen custard, frozen yogurt, and sherbet each offer variations, such as custard’s egg yolks or frozen yogurt’s cultured milk, but all rely on real cream and milk for their signature richness. To help consumers celebrate, The Dairy Alliance is featuring two reader-favorite recipes: Dubai Chocolate Ice Cream, a homemade version of the viral trend with dark chocolate, pistachio kadaifi cream, and a chocolate shell, and Strawberry Cottage Cheese Ice Cream, a no-churn option that blends real dairy cottage cheese with fresh strawberries for a creamy, high-protein treat.
“Making ice cream at home lets you control exactly what goes into it, and real dairy milk and cream gives you a texture that feels genuinely indulgent,” said Farrah Newberry, CEO of The Dairy Alliance. “Whether you’re recreating a viral trend or keeping it simple with a no-churn recipe, real dairy is what takes it to the next level.”
The recipes are designed to be approachable for both beginners and experienced makers, using pantry staples and requiring only a few hours of freezer time. The Dairy Alliance’s full collection of frozen dairy recipes is available at thedairyalliance.com/dairy-recipes.
The focus on homemade desserts comes as consumers increasingly seek control over ingredients and look for ways to enjoy summer treats without artificial additives. By promoting dairy-based recipes, The Dairy Alliance underscores the nutritional benefits of real dairy, including calcium, protein, and vitamins, while supporting local farmers in the Southeast. The organization, funded by dairy farm families, works to raise awareness about dairy’s role in a balanced diet and sustainable agriculture.
National Ice Cream Month, established by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, provides an opportunity to appreciate the dairy industry’s contributions. The Dairy Alliance’s recipes offer a way for families to create memories while enjoying the creamy texture that only real dairy can provide.
