Stonegate Capital Initiates Coverage on Yum! Brands, Highlighting Taco Bell’s U.S. Growth and KFC’s International Expansion

Stonegate Capital Partners has initiated coverage on Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM), offering a detailed analysis of the company’s strategic direction following its Pizza Hut divestiture. The investment firm’s report, released August 26, 2026, underscores a pivotal shift in Yum!’s earnings model, now centered on Taco Bell’s U.S. growth and KFC’s international expansion.

According to Stonegate, Yum!’s second-quarter 2026 results provide clear evidence of this transition. Excluding Pizza Hut, system sales increased 7%, units grew 6%, same-store sales rose 4%, and Core Operating Profit advanced 8%. These figures illustrate the robust performance of the remaining portfolio, which is increasingly dominated by high-growth, predominantly franchised brands.

Taco Bell remains the primary growth engine in the United States, but a July food safety issue has created a near-term interruption. Stonegate views this as temporary, noting that sales trends have improved from the July 18 low, online sentiment has returned to pre-issue levels, and brand-love measures remain intact. Management expects some pressure on third-quarter sales and margins, but the firm believes the impact will be short-lived.

KFC, on the other hand, presents the largest long-term development opportunity. The division opened 660 gross restaurants across 55 markets in the second quarter, achieving 7% unit growth. Stonegate highlights KFC’s attractive franchisee economics and significant international whitespace, estimating a 20,000-unit opportunity. The division continues to target higher average unit volumes (AUVs) and same-store sales growth, positioning it as a key driver of future revenue.

The Pizza Hut divestiture is expected to leave Yum! increasingly concentrated on its higher-growth businesses. Stonegate notes that the transaction should generate approximately $2.3 billion in aggregate net proceeds, which the company plans to use for revolver repayment and substantial share repurchases. This capital allocation strategy, combined with continued unit development and royalty growth across the remaining portfolio, is expected to enhance shareholder value.

The broader operating model is also reinforced by the quarter’s results. Stronger restaurant-level performance supports franchisee returns, which in turn accelerates unit development and expands Yum!’s recurring royalty base. This virtuous cycle is critical to the company’s long-term financial health.

Stonegate’s initiation of coverage comes at a time when Yum! is undergoing significant transformation. The focus on Taco Bell and KFC, both of which have strong brand recognition and growth potential, positions the company to capitalize on evolving consumer preferences. While the food safety issue at Taco Bell is a near-term concern, Stonegate’s analysis suggests that the underlying fundamentals remain intact.

Investors will be watching closely to see how Yum! navigates the third quarter, particularly as it manages the aftermath of the July incident. However, Stonegate’s report offers a positive outlook, emphasizing the resilience of the core brands and the strategic clarity provided by the Pizza Hut divestiture. With a clear focus on high-growth areas and a disciplined capital allocation plan, Yum! appears well-positioned for sustained growth in the coming years.
